BARRY, TOO, DESERVES HIS MEDAL

Our hats are off to the dazzling Dames, for Kelly and Tanni deserved no less.
The same goes for our superb sailors, our brilliant cyclists and those goalden relay sprinters who outran, outchanged and generally outfought the Americans.
ARTICULATE: Davies
Truly, the New Year Honours were splendidly kind to sport. But there was one name on the list which gave us particular satisfaction.
Barry Davies is a commentatorwho believes that his task is to convey, through vividly articulate phrases, the pleasure and significance of the evnt he is covering.
This belief sets him at odds with the current vogue for saloon bar screamers and opinionated adolescents. But I suspect he can live with that.
For Davies has always been his own man. He des not tell us that the Premiershipis the finest competition in the history of the world and is thus incapable of staging a poor match.
Neither does he habiually castigate players, managers and referees in order to acquire a reputation for candour.
He is, in short, an outstanding broadcaster who is ridiculously under-employed but who still has much to contribute to his various sports. He welldeserevs his MBE.
