GREENE: CARROLL CAN'T GET ANY BETTER - HE'S MUSTARD
CRAIG O’Connor has been told by Windsor & Eton boss Dennis Greene that he could have scored 30 goals already this season.
O’Connor is the leading goalscorer for the Royalists with nine, but hot on his heels with eight is midfield maestro Dave Carroll – scorer of both goals in the club’s 2-0 victory over Whyteleafe.
Dave Carroll - Mustard
Greene said: “Craig wants to smash the ball into the goal instead of simply side-footing it in – he wants to break the net.
“A few games ago he could have had five or six but ended up with just one. We have had three 0-0 draws in the last five games that could easily have been wins if Craig had finished in front of goal.
“But Dave Carroll can’t get any better – he’s mustard.”
That’s ‘a good player’ to you or I.
The victory against Whyteleafe only served to further fuel Greene’s belief that his side is good enough to win the league outright this season.
He said: “You have to go some to beat the mighty Windsor these days.
“We have got 20 players all capable of playing in the first team. Last season we didn't have that strength we only had about 15.
“We have conceded just the one goal away from home in eight games and with that sort of form you expect to be top of the league.
“We will have to see how Lewes cope when they get hit with injuries and suspensions. We’ve been through that time and still hung on to it.
“Kieran Adams is still out and so is Jason Cousins (due back on Tuesday against Leatherhead) so at one stage going back a month we had a depleted side.
“So at this moment in time there is no reason why we shouldn't be able to win the league, we will just have to wait and see how Lewes cope when they are in that situation.”
Greene is aiming to rest two or three players for the match with Epsom & Ewell tomorrow and Leatherhead on Tuesday to keep them fresh for the FA Trophy match with Canvey Island on November 29.
Midfielder Carroll is set to miss out, though he did play in Tuesday night’s match with Tooting & Mitcham – a game the Royalists could only draw 1-1.
Greene said: “I think Tooting done well and they really should have won the game. We got outworked but they just did not have enough skill to beat us but they worked hard.
“We got on top of them in the last ten minutes of the match and Craig O’Connor missed from a yard out, striking the covering defender.
“Everytime we got the ball they worked hard to get it back. We went a little more route one towards the end and had three good chances, but they thoroughly deserved their draw.
“I can’t take anything away from them. We only pressed them for about ten minutes so if we had won the game we would not have deserved it.”
Epsom & Ewell have lost 8-0 and 4-0 in their last two games, proving they are not the most in-form of sides.
But it’s the big one against Canvey that has Greene licking his lips.
He said: “It’s really just a matter of how many we beat them by!”
