THEIR FINEST HOUR

WINDSOR & Eton chairman Peter Simpson said his club was paid a huge compliment after the 3-0 win against Vauxhall Motors on Tuesday night.

The Royalists progressed to the fifth round of the FA Trophy at the expense of a Motors side who had already had their season’s climax by beating Nationwide second division team Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup.

Alvin McDonald, manager of the Motormen, gave Mr Simpson a great lift after the match.

“He came up to me and said that in the four and a half years of managing the side, this was the best performance he had seen from any team visiting their ground,” said Mr Simpson.

Windsor & Eton needed a replay after the sides drew 1-1 at Stag Meadow two weeks ago. That match had its incident with the floodlights failing just before the second half.

The Royalists, who have been groomed to success by manager Dennis Greene and assistants Colin Ferguson and Simon Stapleton, could not capture the form they showed in the first half of that match when play restarted and so the replay was needed.

But Mr Simpson said: “Once again they played very good football. I thought they played well at home, but they were even better away. Craig O’Connor was everywhere and was excellent in breaking down their defence and goalkeeper Trevor Bunting won all of the one to one battles.”

Mr Simpson is now looking forward to the fifth round tie with Aylesbury United to be played away on February 22 and a possible £2,500 in prize money.

He said: “It’s a great tie because we will probably attract well over 1000 supporters. That was another interesting factor about Tuesday night.

“There was around 30 travelling Windsor fans. The Barmy Army was there and they were often louder than the home supporters.”
