HODDIE HILL IS THE HERO FOR WINDSOR

DEDWORTH has a habit of breeding goalscorers. Peter Osgood did it for Chelsea and – to a lesser extent – Gordon Hill keeps on doing it for Windsor & Eton.

Not for the first time Hill came off the bench to save his beloved Royalists. His two goals on Saturday sent the Stag Meadow club into the fourth round of the FA Trophy for the first time in their history after a 3-2 victory over Thame United.

Gordon Hill Celebrates His Trophy Goals

Windsor & Eton’s longest serving player said:” “I feel really good about it, coming off the bench for the last 20 minutes to put us in the fourth round for the first time.” Manager Dennis Greene and his assistant Colin Ferguson, simply told Hill to go and do his best.

He did just that finding the net twice within two minutes of replacing Craig O’Connor.

“I told Fergie that if I scored I was going to jump in that bale of hay behind the goal.” He made that visit twice.

Although he remains a fringe player, nobody should be surprised by Hill’s ability to turn a game. It was his goal in midweek that gave the Royalists a 1-0 victory over Chertsey and kept the pressure on the team at the top of the Ryman League Division One South.

But it was back to work on Monday for the 34-year-old builder who has just moved from Lovejoy Lane in Dedworth to Maidenhead with his girlfriend of two years.

Hill, who went to school with St Edward’s before going on to Windsor Boys, moved to Windsor & Eton after a spell with Spital Old Boys – the same club with whom Osgood still has strong connections after playing for them in his younger days.

The Royalists’ striker still enjoys a pint or two in the Stag & Hounds opposite the club’s Stag Meadow ground where he is either celebrating another goal (or two) or drowning his sorrows at being left out of the side.

“The manager has his first eleven now. I am just a substitute. Sometimes it is annoying, but I always do my best when I get on the pitch. This week I have scored three goals in two games.”

In four league starts for the club Hill, has scored three league goals. He has made 11 league appearances in the league as a substitute.

He has made two cup starts and scored three goals, making him the top goalscorer per game for the club he has served for over seven years.

“It still makes me proud when I pull on the Windsor shirt,” he said.

“I am a local boy from Dedworth and it’s my local club.”
