THEM OR US!

TWO clubs, a single aim – to recover their lost status and assert themselves as the best around.
But just which is currently the better team – Slough Town FC or Windsor & Eton FC – is not so easy to decide.
Greene...Assembling Strong Squad
Not so many years ago, the blue and amber Rebels looked down their noses at the red and green Royalists from a distance of five divisions above.
Yet for the past two seasons the pair have been on a par in Ryman League Division One, though now in different regional divisions.
But the banter goes on. For many seasons during the Eighties, fans of both clubs enjoyed the local derby rivalry in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
All that ended in 1990 when the Rebels won promotion to the Conference and, shortly after, the Royalists began the slide in the opposite direction.
Football fortunes being what they are, they played each other last season for the first time in 12 seasons with the Rebels winning at Wexham Park and the teams drawing at Stag Meadow.
Both Steve Browne for Slough and Dennis Greene for Windsor have assembled talented squads which like to play a bit of football.
Both clubs have shown they are good enough to play at a higher level – but the season is long and it is the stayers not the sprinters who win the prize.
Silverware has been in short supply in both boardrooms, the Rebels empty-handed since their treble-winning centenary year in 1990 and the Royalists having to go back even further for success.
This season they will not meet, except if each makes it through their respective halves of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup draw to reach the final.
If they did, that might settle the matter – for now.
