Windsor & Eton have opened a 6 point lead at the top of the Zamaretto League Division 1 South & West table after a 1-0 win at home against 2nd place AFC Totton. In a hotly anticipaed match both sides gave a good account of themselves and proved why they will be the contenders come April 24th. Both sides had a share of the possession but it was the visitors that had the better of the chances. James Taylor should have put Totton ahead in the opening couple of minutes when the ball fell kindly for him but his effort went well wide of the post. Andrew Fagan then rescued Windsor when Rob Bullivant spilled Michael Gosney's effort and just managed to scramble the ball away. Bullivant then came close to setting up Michael Chennells when his long kick up field missed out the Totton defence but Chennells fired over the bar. Gosney, who's delivery had been fantastic all game, struck a free kick which caused problems for Bullivant but he was able to gather at the second attempt under pressure from Taylor. Into the second half and Gosney again set up Taylor who was denied buy a fine save from Bullivant who tipped the ball over the bar. As the half wore on there were changes to both sides but it looked as if no matter what either side did this match was destined to end as a draw. That was util a defence splitting ball from Bruce Wilson set Victor Osobu through to slot the ball under an on-rushing Gareth Barfoot and into the net. Not bad for a player described as having speed but no ability by the visiting manager in one of the local papers. Further changes failed to change the score although Chennells should have settled the match in injury time bt was denied by Barfoot. |
